How to use the wiki
Welcome to the how to use pages which provide an overview of simple ways to format text in a wiki page. For more detailed editing instructions please consult the User's Guide
Reading wiki pages
- Browse through the categories on the main page
- Type a subject in the search box for a listing of all relevant pages
(please note the list of topics on the main page is NOT exhaustive and it may be quicker and easier to type a word or phrase into the search facility)
Creating and editing wiki pages
- If a page for the chosen topic does not yet exist the user will be given the option of creating this page
- Any user may edit any existing page (first you just need to create an account using the green Log in/create account button under personal tools on the left-hand side navigation bar)
Wiki language (wikitext)
Wiki pages will accept text copied from Word or other documents. However when text is copied into the wiki all previous formatting is lost. Formatting is quick and simple to do and only requires a few minutes to learn the relevant codes.
Wikis use their own language called wikitext to format text and insert links into pages. The language can look a little daunting at first, but it really is very simple and easy-to-use.
Simple formatting tasks
You can format text on the page using Wikitext special characters
Italics - italicize by putting 2 apostrophes on each side of the word(s)
e.g. duck will italicise the word duck
Bold - 3 apostrophes on each side of the word(s) will embolden the text
e.g. duck will embolden the word duck
Bold and Italics - 5 apostrophes on each side of the word(s) will embolden and italicize the text
e.g. duck will embolden and italicise the word duck
(Using 4 apostrophes doesn't do anything special -- the last pair are just ' left over ones' that are included as part of the text.)
For simple examples of text formatting, see basic text formatting in the User Guide
Creating titles
To format a heading simply add on either side of your title text, e.g. Fundingwill appear in the wiki as Funding
New lines
A single newline generally has no effect on the layout. These can be used (in the editing area) to separate sentences within a paragraph. Some editors find that this aids editing and improves the diff function (used internally to compare different versions of a page).
An empty line starts a new paragraph.
Please do not start a link or italics or bold text on one line and end on the next.
Creating bullet points (ordered lists)
To create an ordered list simply add an asterisk * in front of the bullet point, e.g.
*this
*that
*the other
appears on the page as:
- this
- that
- the other
For numbered lists, use # before each list point, e.g.
#this
#that
#the other
appears on the page as:
- this
- that
- the other
NB: numbered lists will always start from 1.
Inserting images
To insert an image in a document, firstly upload the image by clicking Upload file (in Toolbox on the Navigation bar). Browse for the image file.
If you would like to add a rollover caption to the image, type the name of the photo or caption in the Summary section e.g.
[Duck] will add the rollover caption Duck to the photo
Permitted file types: png, gif, jpg, jpeg, pdf, doc.
Once the image has been uploaded, edit the document in which the image is to be placed. Insert the image by enclosing the file name in double-squared brackets, e.g.
will insert the image called duck.jpg into the document
will insert the image called duck.jpg into the document with the rollover text "Duck"
Attaching pdf documents
To attach a document to a page, upload the file by clicking Upload file (in Toolbox on the Navigation bar). Browse for the file name.
Once the image has been uploaded, edit the document in which the image is to be placed and insert the image by enclosing the file name in double-squared brackets, e.g.
will insert a direct link to the file called Duck Tales.
> will insert a direct link to the file called Duck Tales and name the link Duck Tales
Inserting links to internal wiki pages
To insert a link to another wiki page simply surround the wiki page title/word(s) in double-squared brackets
e.g. Communicationsinserts a link to the Communications page
Inserting links to external web pages
There are several ways to create a link to an external webpage:
- simply type in the URL, e.g.
http://www.wetlandcare.com.au
which will appear on the page as http://www.wetlandcare.com.au
- add a title to the link, e.g.
WetlandCare Australia
which will appear on the page as WetlandCare Australia
Inserting links to an email address
To insert a link to an email address:
type [mailto:johnsmith@wetlandcare.com.au]this text will appear
as [1]
Or to add a name to the email link use:
[mailto:johnsmith@wetlandcare.com.au John Smith]which will appear in the document as John Smith
